The Night of the Hunter

A bank robber on death row crosses paths with Harry Powell (Robert Mitchum), who is a religious fanatic serial killer that despises woman, but is only doing time for car theft. Every time Harry Powell is enraged by a "sinful" woman his switch blade goes off in his pocket like an erection. Very creepy.

Anyway, Harry hears the bank robber talking in his sleep how he left the stolen money with his children. Only the children know where it is hidden and of course Harry is set out to find the them as soon as he is released.

Shelley Winters plays Willa Harper, the widow of the bank robber that falls for the charming but very evil Harry Powell and they are soon married. After the disappearance of their mother and sensing that their new stepfather is only after the money, the children, John Harper and Pearl Harper, take off in boat down the river. However first there are some very scary (or amusing chase scenes) with Harry Powell's arms stretched forward like a frankenstein chase in the dark. You'll either love or hate this movie. I loved it because it was so unlike no other I have seen.

Although I thought Shelley Winters role was good I was really impressed by Lillian Gish as Rachel Cooper who takes in homeless children. Of course I'm a fan of Lillian Gish for all her silent films but her role in, The Night of the Hunter, was great.

Yes, he is creepy. I saw a another movie the other night with him in it, but I couldn't get over the creepy character from The Night Of The Hunter.
